Born in 1960, Sandra Marquez Yusah is a sprightly native of Jolo As a child, she never drew except for arrows and some doodles. In 2004, Sandra was given the gift of art. She began drawing as an expression of her emotions and grief for the loss of her siblings. Drawing turned into a passion and became a turning point in Sandra’s life as a pen and ink artist.

She started using a range of pens in a variety of colors on paper. Sandra who is a Doctor of Dental Medicine is largely self- taught.

All of her drawings begin from a vision that develops into a more in-depth ideas and lovely detailed images. None of it was intentional. It all evolves and become a story in itself. Sandra uses symbology, numerology and she puts a personal meaning to each color. In 2012, Sandra started using acrylic paint on canvas. She puts her faith and prays that the paint will reveal the images from within her emotional unconscious.

The Queen of Sulu Dayangdayang Hadji Piandao, Sandra’s great grandaunt has a profound connection to her and for that reason, you will find that her art also tells a story about her noble background.

Most importantly, an object that Sandra witnessed drop from the San Francisco sky at dusk which instantly disappeared from the atmosphere is the neon green waterdrop. It became the main visual and significant part of her art. The different elements in Sandra’s art was derived from her level of spiritual consciousness, strong love of family, history, tradition and her rich cultural heritage. Love, poetry and music inspires Sandra. The colours in her paintings show how her enthusiasm for life and joy of living is.

The possibilities are limitless.

And because Sandra puts a little piece of herself into everything that she makes, Sandra would like her art to move people to the point that they will want to take it home and know why it is worth owning.

Sandra would want to make every opportunity to present, show and explain the story behind each piece that she creates in ways that whomever is listening will find it compelling. Sandra would like her work to be a contribution to society where it brings joy, peace, solve conflicts and make this world a better place to live. Above all, the heart of the art is Allah.

Sandra Marquez Yusah is the first woman tausug contemporary artist.
